Day 4

Today, we decided to go to some of the West Maui beaches, so after our standard breakfast of coconut pastries, papayas and apple bananas, and of course, delicious Maui coffee, we headed up.  We stopped at DT Fleming Beach in Kapalua.  The ocean was really worked up – the waves big.  Steve was fighting a cold (which ended up getting him by the end of the day), so he stayed out of the water.  I waded in however, and nearly got knocked over several times!  It started raining, and once it got coming down hard enough that it had become too annoying, we left.

Next stop was searching for the Nakelele Blowhole.  The road there is very windy and narrow, but very beautiful.  There are many pull outs to view the beauty of the ocean and the shores.  I must say that some people drive those crazy roads like complete idiots.  Give an idiot an SUV and they think they’re safe from anything.

We made it to the blowhole, and what a sight.  We stayed up at the outlook because neither of us fancied being sucked in to the ocean, and viewed from up there.  I’ve seen pictures of it, but you really have to go see it in person.  It’s such a phenomenon!!!  Very awesome.

On the way back, we pulled into some of the outlooks and were amazed at how beautiful it is.  (Again).  Along one part, the rock is so red!  Redder than any rock I’ve ever seen!  Very cool!

We reached an area of rainforest, where we stopped again.  On reflection, I think it’s the start of the Kapalua Coastal Trail, and I wish I had realized it then, because I wanted to walk it.  But we didn’t.  We took several photos.  It truly is one of the most beautiful lush places I have ever seen.

By this time, Steve’s cold had really taken hold of him and he was feeling pretty awful, so we headed back.  We did stop at Olawalu and picked up a pineapple and a dragon fruit, and Steve zipped into Leoda’s to pick up a coconut cream pie for Thursday’s dessert, along with an order of mac and cheese for his dinner, then we headed back to the condo where he promptly crashed for a couple of hours.  It was very hot, so I sat out on the lanai with a cold beer and read.  It was good to sit around and do nothing for the rest of the day.

Tomorrow:  Kathy and Luis arrive!
