Day 9

We woke up in pain.  The burn below my neck has turned into blisters, and Kathy’s legs are bad.  We hurt.  A lot.  So we decided to stay away from the beach today.

After breakfast, we headed to Iao State Park to see some beautiful scenery and the Iao Needle.  It really is very beautiful, and there is so much history there.  We were there by 10 and it was already difficult to find parking – glad we didn’t go later.  We spent about an hour there, thoroughly enjoying it, and then stopped in Wailuku at the highly recommended Four Sisters Bakery for some malasadas and cinnamon buns.  The cinnamon buns were very odd – made from donut dough.  Too sweet, but the malasadas were yummy.  And Luis, for whom they are a traditional yummy, liked them too!

From that side of the island, we headed back and stopped at the Shops at Wailea so the guys could get baseball caps to wear while stand-up paddleboarding tomorrow.  Then we headed back to the condo to get ready for the Willie K Show at Mulligans on the Blue.

We had booked our reservations quite some time ago, but the schedule for Willie K had not been confirmed at that time.  A week before leaving, I noticed that he was NOT performing on the night we booked for and they had NOT called me to let me know.  So I called them, they apologized profusely about not calling, changed our reservations to this night and promised a “very good table for our party” because of their mess-up.

The table sucked.  All tables for 4 sucked.  It was along the side, so although we were close, we got an awesome view of the back part of Willie K’s side.  YAY.  We saw none of his apparently awesome guitar fingering.  Yeah, I was ticked.  The dinner was ok.  The server was terrible.  The chairs were terribly uncomfortable.

BUT the entertainment was AMAZING.  Willie K was awesome – what an entertainer that man is.  I could have sat and listened to him for hours – IF we had been in chairs that were even somewhat comfortable.  As it was, they were so uncomfortable that I was wanting his brilliant performance to end so I could get the hell out of that chair.

Steve and Luis were much more optimistic and tried to make the best of it, but Kathy and I were more pissy about the whole thing.

Ah well.  A whole bunch of money for awesome entertainment, crappy location, forgettable food, terrible service and huge discomfort.
