Morning on the Beach

Up early again.  We want to take advantage of every minute of these last two days on Maui.  After breakfast on the lanai, we headed down to Ulua Beach – were there around 7:30 to make sure we could get parking.  We didn’t enjoy it, though – there were a lot of bugs, so after about 45 minutes we packed up and went to Polo – our favourite beach.  Spent the morning thoroughly enjoying the sun and the water.  The waves were a little stronger this morning and they sounded so much louder.  Loved it!!!!

Afternoon – Lava Fields

We both noticed that each other was getting a bit red, so we packed up and went for lunch, again at Stella Blues.  After lunch, we went to a funky little outdoor mall-type thing – vendors selling pretty well the same old thing – but we needed a couple more gifts to bring back home.  We found them, finished up with our gift shopping, stopped at the condo to get some bottles of water, and headed south to Makena and the lava fields.

Now those lava fields are kind of spooky.  The road got narrower and bumpier, we passed some huge estate houses (can’t imagine how many millions of $$ those cost) and continued along.  It was so weird.  Areas looked kind of like farmers’ fields, plowed up, but it wasn’t dirt – it was black lava rock.  Everywhere, on both sides of the road.  Lots and lots and lots of black lava rock.  Really kind of eery.  We finally turned around and came back.  We tried stopping at Big Beach, because we hadn’t been there yet and it’s supposed to be pretty awesome, but the parking lot was full almost to the very back – that would have meant a very long walk carrying chairs and umbrella, along with the beachbag and cooler.  So we didn’t stop.

Happy Hour & Another Gorgeous Sunset

Instead, we went back to our favourite Happy Hour place – Cheeseburgers on the Island!!!

After all, Ingrid and Julianna had asked me to have a pina colada for each of them.  How could I disappoint my friends!!!  Had a pina colada for Ingrid and had a Hawaiian sunburn for Julianna. Girls, they were great!!!!  I thoroughly enjoyed them for you!!!  And toasted each of you!

We left Cheeseburgers and went down to the beach path, this time turning left and walking past the Marriot and towards the Grand Wailea, to Wailea Beach.   Such a beautiful walk, such a beautiful beach, and the sun was just barely beginning to show its lovely colours.  Spent about an hour walking along the shore enjoying the sand between our toes.  The water was so warm.  The surf was much stronger than in the mornings, and we loved the feeling of the waves washing up against us.

Back to the condo to watch the last of the sunset.  The colours are so brilliant tonight – bright, bright orange and yellow – so vivid!   Our last sunset – when the sun goes down tomorrow evening, we will be on our way to Kahului – to leave this magnificent island.
