Day 10 – SUP

Stand-up paddleboarding for the guys today.

After much research, we choose Hawaiian Paddle Sports.  A bit more pricey, but they offered private 2 hour lessons and had amazing reviews.  Kathy and I sat out, but Steve and Luis went for it.

These were from Makena Landing, so close to the condo.  We met John, their instructor out there, and he gave them a bit of on-land instruction and then the three of them headed into the water.  Luis was a natural – after a couple of tries, he was up and seemed pretty steady.  Steve took a bit longer, but once John gave him an alternate (two foot hop) to get up, he caught on and was set!  No more butt paddling for Steve.

John took them out around the point to turtle town, where they saw several turtles.  One even was using the fin on Steve’s board to scratch himself.  The guys LOVED their experience and will both definitely do this again.  Steve says he had a zen moment out there, peacefully paddling along.

Kathy and I sat on the beach (in the shade) and took lots of photos.

Since it was still early when we were done, we headed up to the Upcountry.  Makawao was super busy and the Volcano spice place was STILL closed.  Strange how things operate.  Sometimes the owners of the store just don’t show up and the stores remain closed!!!  We got some treats at the Komoda general store, I bought my “special purchase” at Maui Hands – some gorgeous green and turquoise gem earrings, then we set off to find the Holy Ghost Church in Kula.

We found it, spent time wandering around, taking photos, looking around the graveyard in the back of the churchyard and this time, the giftshop being opened, Luis bought some rosaries as gifts for his mom and sister.  We then continued along, looking for Grandma’s Coffee Shop.  We missed it, but made it to the winery where we each bought a couple of bottles of a very nice, mild, pineapple wine to bring home.  Then headed back, where we finally DID find Grandma’s Coffee Shop – but figured it was too late to eat something, and continued back.  It was raining pretty hard.

Since we had done no sunset on the beach time, we wanted to make sure we were back to do this.  We got changed and headed to Wailea Beach.

It was fairly overcast and there were a lot of clouds, so it wasn’t a beautiful sunset, but we got a whole bunch of photos.  There was a small wedding up on the rise above the beach, and a guy flying a kite from the beach.  Beautiful and peaceful.  The beach is such a wonderful place to find yourself.

Back to the condo, where Steve had a lie down – he was hurting from all the SUP exercise.  We barbecued chicken, and had it with roasted potatoes and salad.  A quiet evening visiting in the condo.
